Best Training Strategies for optimum fat loss

If you ever been to a doctor, the first thing they do is convince you to do low to moderate intensity aerobic training. This is also referred to as cardio. They suggest you do about 30-60 minutes of steady pace cardio for about 3-5 times in a week. They claim this helps maintain your heart rate at a moderate level.

Before you get involved in such a routine, consider some recent scientific research that gives concrete facts to prove such cardio workouts may not work that well after all.

New Season

Ok....haven't posted here for a while...been busy working. I haven't had much time to think about riding, but now that Spring is here, and I see LOTS of ads in the paper for dirt bikes, I figure I had better start planning for the season.

Hopefully we will get out this weekend for some riding (if the snow melts quick enough). Temperatures are supposed to be in the 60's and 70's...about perfect. Perhaps we'll check out IMI. Oil is changed, and the bikes check out, so other than getting the rest of the gear together, we are ready to go. Stay tuned.

Gears Games and Gadgets

I took my daughter to the Gears Games and Gadgets show this weekend at the Denver Convention Center. This show is free, and sponsored by the Stevenson Automotive Group.

Over 120 exhibitors from around the country filled the convention center with electronic gadgets, vehicles, extreme sports, hunting and fishing gear and more. Luxury cars, home spas, construction trucks, ski and snowboard equipment were all on-site for visitors to peruse and enjoy.

We had a blast. We had a chance to look at the latest dirt bikes from Yamaha, plus ATV's, snowmobiles, and lots of custom street bikes.

I especially like looking at some of the latest inovations in cargo and camping trailers, as well as Stevensons usual display of the latest trucks. Also, there is no doubt that diesel trucks are enjoying a surge in popularity. My favorite, from a pure comfort level, is the GMC. I've heard that many folks seem to prefer Ford because of it's engine, tho. I happen to like my 02 Toyota Landcruiser (TLC), but I am certainly drawn to the power and mileage potential of turbo diesels when towing.

Last summer, I took my family on a trip to WI, and I towed our 6x12 cargo trailer with 4 bikes plus gear. At best, the TLC got 10 MPG @ 70MPH. Although the TLC never lacked for power with my setup, I'm thinking I could have seen much better fuel mileage with one of these new turbo diesels (plus maybe a performance chip). Can't beat the TLC for a smooth ride, tho.

Anyway, the show was fun! I could probably write for an hour about everything we experienced, but the funniest thing was watching kids and adults try to throw a football through a hole from about 20-25 feet (KOA booth). The best was a 12-14 year old girl, who had an abundance of confidence, and nailed 2 out of 3....much better than most of the boys and grown men!

I highly recommend attending this show every year, especially since there is no cover charge!

ATV's and Dirt Bikes

While at Watkins this weekend, it was apparent that ATV's and Dirt Bikes don't mix well, especially on dirt tracks. I was almost rear-ended by an ATV, and my daughter was...fortunately, she escaped injury and had a small amount of bike damage. Of course, it was so crowded that it was risky regardless of the ATV's.

If only the owners/managers of these facilities could create tracks just for ATV's, or possibly have "ATV only" periods during the day. ATV's take up so much of the track that it is hard to avoid them, and easy for an agressive ATV rider to rear-end you. Very little room for error. You can regularly see a "pack" of dirt bikes flying around the track with no problems, but put an ATV into the mix is asking for injuries. For example, at one poing this weekend I saw several riders stop to help a fallen (and injured) dirt bike rider, only to have an ATV rider come flying up to the group, lose control, followed by the ATV performing end-over-end flips through the people. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

Some common sense would certainly go a long way here.

Watkins

Visited the Watkins Race Park east of Denver this weekend. Great weather! However, it was exceptionally crowded. I spoke with a few of the regular riders, and they said they had never seen it so busy.

Basically, Watkins has 3 tracks:

A short, technical, "beginners" track. Very little air, but good technical turns and bumps.

An mid-level track that is actually very fun, and has some very good jumps. Tough when crowded, but gives you the option of riding around the toughest berms.

An advanced Supercross caliber track. I didn't get a chance to ride this, as it also was very crowded with some very good riders...I didn't want to mix it up with them without really scouting the track first.

Unfortunately, I saw a couple of accidents...one 8 year old (I think) was airlifted out by helicopter. I don't know what happened to him, but another rider said he was awake and moving...hopefully a good sign. His accident happened on the Supercross track. When it was that crowded, I am surprise that parents let these kids do that.

Anyway, nice facility, and plenty of challenge. Not difficult to access, either. Take Jewell west from E470 (just south of I70) about 4 miles...on the left (north) side. They charge $10 bucks a head, less if it's 80cc or smaller. Bring plenty of water.

Some links...

Where to find good dirt bike trails?

Not an easy question. Motocross parks, ATV trails, single track. Forest Service lands, BLM, private property. And the constant battle of closing trails, typically a result of rider abuse. I thought I would create a blog to open some discussion. There are many experts on these subjects, and I don't purport to be one of them, hence my need to learn.

But my curiosity and desire to learn comes from my own personal situation. I have ridden motorcycles (and I prefer motorcycles over ATV's) since a teenager, and have recently involved my wife (who has never ridden before this year) as well as my teenage daughters. As beginners, not only is it difficult to find a place to ride, but to find fun places that are not technically challenging, as they don't yet have the technical skills.

We have found that trails marked "easy" or beginner", are not...unless it is a road. Although I can ride through very difficult terrain, I don't like getting my family into tough situations that could get them seriously hurt. Nor do I want to discourage them.

I do want to point out that both my girls, and my wife, are very good athletes. But it takes time and experience to gain the proper skills.

So where to ride? I will post web links to many of the organizations and locations that I know about. Suggestions are certainly welcome.
